Do you need to find out your brides finger measurements? Without that critical piece of information, how do you choose the perfect sapphire engagement ring? Here are some options to help determine her perfect size. However there no need to worry if you get the measurements wrong all our sapphire engagement rings can be adjusted once you pop the question!
- When she is out with her friends, go into her jewellery box and take a ring that she would usually wear on her right hand “wedding finger” you know she won’t miss for a day and take it with you to the jeweller. This will usually be the most similar to her wedding finger size.
- If you have a feeling she may notice one of her rings are missing, feel free to take a pencil and with a piece of paper, trace the inside of the ring while she’s busy and give it to Simon and his team of jewellers to go off.
- If your future bride is aware of a future proposal, ask her to measure her finger and give you the measurements. Don’t worry it can still be just as big a surprise!

Picking the correct diamond or Sapphire:
In order to pick the right diamond or gemstone you will need to sift through a range of shapes and sizes. As well as the clarity and colour of the solitaire diamond tends to be an important part of your engagement ring. Simon and his team will guide and give detailed information on all the available options to you when choosing a diamond or gemstone.
Choosing the right Metal:
Usually the most popular metals for engagement rings are usually White Gold, Platinum and Rose Gold all of which Simon can have prepared for your ring. Depending on your bride to be’s personal taste she may tend to wear mostly silver or white gold/platinum jewellery then a White Gold or Platinum metal would usually be the best option despite their difference in chemical make up. Although, if she tends to steer away from particular colours, a Rose Gold or Yellow Gold may be another good option.
How to pick a Design:
In order to ensure the right design is chosen, the Simon West store has a vast range of sapphire engagement rings on display where you can decide what designs suit your partners particular hand. For most people the most important types of the engagement ring design is the setting. There are many ways that you diamond can be set, therefore Simon and his team will explore all the possible ways that your chosen gemstone can be set.
A one of a kind Simon West sapphire engagement ring deserves to remain squeaky clean, and everyone can agree there is something so beautiful about an engagement ring shining in the sunlight. Therefore it makes complete sense that you want to beautify your ring the second it gets a little bit tarnished. We have a life time ring cleaning service here at Simon West Fine Jewellery that is available for you to use if needed. Although if you don’t feel like popping in and having a visit here are some of our top tips for cleaning your ring at home.
How Do I Clean My Ring At Home?
If your ring is dirty or tarnished because of everyday and general cosmetics you can find in the bathroom, any at home soap should to the trick when trying to clean your ring. At Simon West we recommend mixing some warm tap water and dishwashing soap and then soaking the ring for 20-40 minutes in a safe place. Once this is done gently brush the sapphire stone with a soft toothbrush and finish by running the ring under cold water. Don’t forget to block off the drain first!
When Should I Clean My Sapphire Ring?
If you want your ring to remain immaculate looking you should aim to try and clean it at least once a week. However, if that seems like a time consuming and audacious process, you should bring it into your Jeweller every six months to get the ring cleaned professionally.
Do Not Use These Products on Your Sapphire Ring:
Chlorine, bleach or acetone are all products that you should NEVER use on any type of diamond or stone due to their harsh properties that will breakdown and destroy the metals in your band and ring. When a ring loses its sparkle it can be quite scary, although it may only be because it’s a ring that hasn’t been properly cared for, so there is no need to stress! Bring the ring into Simon West Fine Jewellers in his CBD showroom and we will do our best to advise you with the next steps!
A lot of people question whether they should insure their new engagement ring or not. Ring insurance can be a huge lifesaver if you lose of misplace your ring. That’s why ring insurance for some people is a must! If something were to happen to it you would want your precious ring back.
There a few options you can choose from if you’re not sure where to start.
There are some home insurance policies or contents insurances will cover some sort of ring insurance or cover if the ring is lost, damaged or stolen within your home. Although many people steer away from this option as most insurance companies set a limit as to the amount you can claim back on the ring. Ie if you lost your ring and it cost $8,500 you may only get $1500 back. This will also usually not cover you for if you wear the ring away from home.
You can also have your engagement ring insured separately to your contents insurance. This is very doable with specialised insurance. Specialised insurance policies end to carry a higher level of cover than your usual contents insurance. Benefits include an agreed additional replacement, a value policy, free annual revaluation, worldwide cover, and repair and replacement at your preferred jewellers. A lot of people tend to like this option due to the amount of cover it has.
The “Three Month Salary Rule” first started in the 1930’s-40’s when times were much harder, as such a campaign was started to tell men how much to should spend on an engagement ring, that being a one months salary at the time. The idea is depending on your other spending habits the “three month salary rule” can be a good start when deciding how much to spend on a ring either as a range or a set price, however after tax this can break the bank for a lot of people.
How much to spend on an engagement ring?
The honest truth is that there is no right amount! There’s no reason for a three month salary rule for an engagement ring. A better idea may be to look and focus for the actual ring not the price, and if it’s within the price range then buy the ring. For some people a give or take range for a ring is usually a better idea rather than a fixed amount incase the particular ring you like is slightly over and not feel like it’s too large a price.
